Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) has broadened its eduroam service to include multiple international airports. After its debut at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport—the first airport in South Asia to offer eduroam—the service is now available at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport and Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport. This means that students, academics and staff have easy access to the internet while traveling, supporting their academic and professional needs on the go.
Eduroam is the secure, worldwide Wi-Fi roaming service developed for the international research and education community. The service allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to get internet connectivity at thousands of eduroam hot spots in more than 100 countries.
When eduroam was launched at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HISA) in May 2023, the airport became the first in South Asia to offer the service.
With the expansion, BdREN, in collaboration with Aamra Networks Limited and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, has extended eduroam’s coverage to include airport lounges, previously uncovered Wi-Fi areas, and lounges at HSIA. Additionally, travellers passing through Sylhet and Chittagong can now benefit from the same high-speed, reliable connectivity.
“The initial launch of eduroam (at HSIA on May 31, 2023, ed.) marked a groundbreaking moment for Bangladesh, establishing the country as a regional leader in academic connectivity. The service, which allows students, researchers, and faculty members to connect seamlessly to a global Wi-Fi network, supports uninterrupted academic activities such as remote lectures, accessing research resources, and collaboration with peers. This development underscores Bangladesh’s commitment to fostering education and research on an international scale,” according to the BdREN website.
BdREN’s efforts have now turned toward the next phase:
“With the success at international hubs, BdREN aims to roll out eduroam services to local airports in Bangladesh, further extending the reach of this global education network. By creating a seamless, accessible digital environment, Bangladesh is poised to strengthen its role as a hub for research, education, and international collaboration.”
